Use a Nikon Coolscan V ED film scanner with a modern Mac

The Nikon Coolscan V ED is a film scanner that can still be useful for digitising negatives and slides. When Nikon's original scanning software no longer runs on a newer Mac, owners can be left with a working scanner they can no longer use with their computer.

VueScan, developed by Hamrick Software, offers a way to keep using the scanner. It replaces the original Nikon Scan application, allowing you to control the scanner, preview your images and save digital copies of your film.

VueScan specifically supports the Nikon Coolscan V ED, also known as the LS-50, and offers versions for both Intel-based and Apple Silicon Macs. It connects to the scanner through its existing USB connection, so you don't need to modify the scanner itself.

Unlike some of the other solutions in our directory, VueScan is commercial software. However, you can try it with your scanner before deciding whether to buy it.

Getting started

The best place to start is with the free VueScan trial.

Check the software requirements for your version of macOS before installing. Although VueScan offers Intel and Apple Silicon versions, check with the publisher if its requirements do not clearly cover your macOS version.

Download the appropriate Mac version from the VueScan website and connect your Coolscan V ED using its USB cable. Newer Macs with USB-C ports may require an adapter.

Once installed, open VueScan and check whether it recognises your scanner. If it does, try previewing a negative or slide and making a test scan. This will help establish whether VueScan works with your particular scanner and Mac before you spend any money.

Trying and buying VueScan

The trial allows you to test the scanner and explore VueScan's features, but saved images contain a permanent watermark. If you decide to purchase the software, you'll need to scan the original film again to produce clean images.

Film scanning with the Coolscan V ED requires VueScan's Professional edition. This is available through a subscription or a one-off purchase. The one-off licence includes a year of software updates, after which you can continue using the versions covered by your purchase. A normal subscription permits use while it remains active.

You can find the current prices and licence options on the VueScan website.

If the scanner doesn't work with the trial, buying the software won't resolve the problem. VueScan is a replacement for the original scanning software, not a repair for mechanical or electrical faults.

Using VueScan

VueScan has its own controls for film type, colour, resolution and image processing, so it may take a little time to get familiar with the software if you're used to Nikon Scan.

It also supports the scanner's infrared dust-cleaning feature, although this isn't suitable for traditional silver-based black-and-white film. The Coolscan V ED page provides further information about the scanner's supported features.

About this solution

VueScan is developed and maintained by Hamrick Software, which provides ongoing support for many older scanners that have lost manufacturer software support.

Hamrick Software lists the Coolscan V ED as supported on Mac, although we haven't independently tested it with this scanner or verified every macOS version.

Have you managed to get your Coolscan V ED working with a newer Mac? We'd welcome details of your setup, including the Mac, macOS version and VueScan version, to help other owners.
