Restore Scarlett 8i6 mixer controls on a modern Mac
The first-generation Scarlett 8i6 can play and record audio on a modern Mac, but its original control software may no longer work. Scarlett MixControl Community Edition is a free app that restores the mixing and routing controls on macOS 14 or later.
What works
The additional mixer app restores access to mixing and routing controls. Basic audio playback and recording already work through macOS.
Limitations
This entry covers the first-generation 8i6 only. Later Scarlett generations and FireWire Saffire devices are outside its scope. The exact tested Mac and app version remain unconfirmed.
Installation
Download the app from the project’s releases page. It comes in a ZIP file, which bundles the app into a single download. Double-click the ZIP to open it, then move the extracted app to Applications. macOS may block the first launch because the app has not been signed with an Apple-issued developer certificate. Read the project’s first-launch instructions before deciding whether to allow it in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Selecting “Open Anyway” tells the Mac to run the app despite the warning. Check that you downloaded it from the original project, read the project’s explanation of the warning and ask for help if you are unsure.
Help with downloads and setup explains download choices, security warnings and recovery planning.
Testing and feedback
The developer tested a first-generation Scarlett 8i6. The app requires macOS 14 or later; the exact Mac, processor, macOS version, app version and test date are not recorded in the available test information.
